Tottenham v Derby 21/08/96 7.45

Tottenham (1) 1 Derby (0) 1 FT
Sheringham 34 Dailly 90

Christian Dailly's dramatic injury-time equaliser rescued another late, late point for promoted Derby and confounded Tottenham after Teddy Sheringham had put Spurs in command with a super first-half strike.

Jim Smith's Rams battled back from 0-2 and 2-3 down to earn a draw against Leeds in the last few minutes on Saturday and left it even later at White Hart Lane.

But new boy Dailly's precious strike - a header following Paul Parker's long throw - was fully deserved after Jacob Laursen's shot came back off the inside of a post just a minute earlier.

Tottenham, though, stand accused of throwing the game away. It looked plain sailing after Sheringham, who took over as skipper from Saturday's broken-leg victim Gary Mabbutt, swept home a 22-yard free kick 11 minutes before the break.

Igor Stimac's foul on Ruel Fox brought the free kick and then referee Keith Burge ordered another immediately after booking Derby's Dean Sturridge for foot-up at the original.

Sheringham cleverly took the ball back a couple of yards to give himself sufficient angle to clip his shot past the defensive wall and beyond Russell Hoult's despairing dive.

Derby's bright start had spluttered out after Dailly's low drive flashed just wide and Spurs keeper Ian Walker just kept out Sturridge after a mistake in defence by David Howells.

Sheringham could have easily added to his goal, but was surprised by the speed of Fox's fierce cross and headed over.

With Derby lacking a cutting edge despite Aljosa Asanovic's educated touches in midfield, Spurs could have wrapped things up, but Chris Armstrong, the two-goal hero at Blackburn on Saturday, was off target with a clear header from Fox's flick.

Derby took their cue to come forward again and boss Smith boldly took off strikers Sturridge and Marco Gabbiadini to allow subs Paul Simpson and Ron Willems to spearhead the attack in the last 20 minutes.

It paid off, with Scottish star Dailly applying the finishing touch just when Spurs looked like holding on for an undeserved win.
